The Old Hag Syndrome or just Vegas Val?

You wake up unable to move, barely able to breathe... you feel an oppressive weight on your chest... and you sense some evil presence in the room...

When I think of who Vegas Val might be, all I can think of is the Old Hag, but instead of her coming and sitting on your chest at night and sucking out your soul, she is posting on forums in an attempt to suck the life and respectability out of anyone who dare oppose her…or mention school impacts. Yes, to me she will forever be the internet hag.

The "Old Hag Syndrome" sometimes referred to as "Night Hag" is a commonly used term for sleep paralysis among many different cultures mainly in the western world. The history behind her story is quite intriguing and frankly, a bit creepy, especially if you have ever experienced this phenomena. The term Old Hag is derived from a couple of sources, one being the word for Nightmare; Night -of course and Mare being derived from the old English term Maere meaning demon or incubus. In case you didn’t know, an incubus is believed to be a demon that visits during the night….that or a bitchy, self serving, insulting, lawsuit happy hag who goes by the name Vegas Val.

The name of the phenomenon comes from the superstitious belief that a witch - or an old hag - sits or "rides" the chest of the victims, rendering them immobile. The scary thing about the old hag syndrome is that the victim is awakened only to find that they cannot move, even though they can see, hear, feel and smell. There is sometimes the feeling of a great weight on the chest and the sense that there is a sinister or evil presence in the room.

Throughout human history across all cultures there are reports of attackers that come at night, to crush or suck the life out of the paralyzed victim. Vampires, demons, witches, devils all are different names for the old hag, many cultures report waking in the night, being unable to move and then sensing an evil presence in the room or footsteps outside the door. The figure will walk to the terrified person and usually straddle their chest crushing the breath and life out of them or biting or sucking the life out of them. The experience is normally short lived but can last up to 8-10 minutes, it has been blamed for many other reports such as alien abduction and experimentation.

Yikes! Sounds like a Vegas Val experience. She logs on in the middle of the night and systematically trolls through each anti casino blog or posting, takes statements from those blogs out of context and attacks. The unsuspecting victim logs on the next day only to find her irrational ranting and insults thrown at them on public forums and websites. Her crass statements cause a computer poster actual paralysis where the person cannot move – only stare and read - it is difficult to understand what is going on – the ranting, the raving, the goading for someone to just sue them already! The VVV (Vegas Val Victim) feels that this person must be a nightmare, yet is awake and can sense the evil presence around them…..attempting to crush the breath and life out of them….it not a dream or a nightmare….it is Vegas Val….The Old Hag.
